Cairo is a city of rich history, vibrant culture, and lively neighborhoods. Below are a few highlights and ideas to inspire your time here. For getting around the city, we recommend using apps like Uber or similar services, though the metro is also an option. If you’d prefer a private driver, feel free to ask Michael for help.
We’d recommend going to the pyramids early in the morning, right when they open – it’s much quieter and not as hot yet. The light is also really nice at that time. Late afternoon is another good option, especially for sunset. If you can, try to avoid the weekend (Friday and Saturday), as it tends to get more crowded.
Here are a few areas we recommend:
Zamalek – A leafy and relaxed neighborhood on an island in the Nile, known for its cafés, restaurants, and boutiques.
Downtown Cairo – Lively and full of character, with historic buildings, local shops, and a real sense of everyday Cairo life.
Coptic Cairo – One of the oldest parts of the city, known for its historic churches, peaceful atmosphere, and rich religious heritage.
Islamic Cairo/Historic Cairo – A fascinating area filled with historic mosques, narrow streets, and traditional markets. Ideal for those interested in history and culture.
Fayoum & Tunis Village (desert landscapes and a charming pottery village)
Alexandria (Mediterranean city with a relaxed seaside vibe and historic sites)
Siwa Oasis (remote and magical oasis near the Libyan border, known for its salt lakes, desert safaris, and unique culture)
The White & Black Desert (overnight camping trips)
Sinai Peninsula (e.g. St. Catherine/Mount Sinai for hiking, Ras Sedr for kitesurfing, Nuweiba for peace and quiet, Dahab for a laid-back/backpacker vibe, and Sharm El Sheikh for snorkeling and all-inclusive resorts)
The Red Sea Coast (Ain Sokhna for a quick beach getaway from Cairo, Hurghada for easy access and resorts, El Gouna (one of our favorites) for a more stylish and relaxed atmosphere and Marsa Alam for untouched reefs)
Luxor (incredible ancient temples and tombs, often described as the world’s greatest open-air museum)
Aswan (beautiful Nile scenery, Nubian culture, and a slow, peaceful atmosphere)
